  •   The Danube Delta - Natural Environment:

After crossing 10 countries and 4 capitals (2860km) and before flowing into the Black Sea, the Danube River forms the youngest land in Romania and Europe: the Danube Delta. It is a magnificent sight, created by marvelous ecosystems of plants and animals. The Danube Delta is crossed by parallel 45 northern latitude and by the meridian 29 eastern longitude. Its limit is marked by the junction of the Dobrujan hills and the banks of the river's arms.
Its surface, together with the Razim-Sinoe lagoon complex, measures 5050sqkm, of which 732sqkm are on the Ukrainian territory. If considered individually, the Delta is 2540sqkm large; this is an expanding surface due to the 67 million tones of alluvial deposits that the river brings along each year. The narrow reefs of the delta have fine sand, formed by loess sediments and very humid alluvial soils in lower areas.
Its three arms, St. George, Sulina and Chilia have different ages: the oldest is St. George (70km), and the most recent is Chilia (120 km). More than 400 lakes of various sizes, oak and ash tree forests, the sand dunes and beaches along the coast enhance the great variety and uniqueness of this humid region.
In 1990, UNESCO declared the Danube Delta a Reservation of the Biosphere. It comprises the delta, the Razim-Sinoe lagoon complex and the valley of the river; from upstream to Cotul Pisicii it covers an area of 591200ha - 2.5% of the Romanian territory.

    CLIMATE
The warm climatic conditions (average yearly temperature 11-11.6 degrees C), the low rainfall (350-450 mm/year) and the long sunny period (2300-2500hours/year) allow tourist activities until fall.

    FLORA
Almost 1/3 of the total plant species that live in Romania can be admired here, also most of medicinal hubs, the biggest surface on Earth covered by reed and 2 forests which are unique in Europe, covered by secular oaks and Mediterranean creepers (the Letea and Caraorman Forests).
DDBR is one of the vastest water-covered surfaces on Earth; it is home to 30 types of ecosystems, over 5,500 plant and animal species, of which 325 are birds. All these characteristics make the Danube Delta a very special place for research and also for nature loving travelers.

    FAUNA
The lakes, cannels and arms of the river are extremely rich in fish and along with the game resources, these offer a delicious gourmet feast for the tourists that choose the Danube Delta. Over 280 bird species live here; these are predators (117), sedentary (44) and 133 migrate. According to their origins, these birds come from various natural environments: European, Mediterranean, Siberian, Mongolian, Arctic and Chinese. The fauna is completed by: the wild boar, fox, otter, mink, etc. The most common reptiles are: the sand snake, steppe small adder and land tortoise.

      TULCEA - Brief History:

Built on seven hills and bearing Turkish influences, Tulcea is the entry gate to the wonders of the Danube Delta. The city is very rich in art and historic monuments and lies close to the region where the Danube forms three main separate arms. The local archeological vestiges (Dacian and Getic objects) are similar to those found at Hamangia and take us back to the Paleolithic.

The local culture and civilization developed under many foreign influences, forming an intricate and unique cultural pattern, renowned for the tolerance manifested towards each of the communities established here.
